Also read Critical Path Method ( Copyright © Arch Media Group LLC) The critical path method, abbreviated as CPM, is the most commonly used type of scheduling technique in the construction industry. The critical path method is built around the use of predecessors and successors for each construction task needed to accomplish the job. Most tasks (except the initial task) will have one or more predecessors that need to be accomplished before that task can start. If we select a certain task, such a framing a house, we need to determine what must occur before the framing can be constructed. In this case the ground floor slab will need to be finished before the framing can be placed on top of it. Therefore, creation of a ground floor slab is the predecessor of the house framing task. Conversely, framing the house is a successor of the ground floor slab construction. Following the placement of tasks in the schedule, along with the creation of linkages between the predecessor and s
Managing a project need just simple management skill ranging as follows:-
ReplyDelete1. Leadership skills to manage team members
2. Technical skills on the project in progress
3. Communication skills needed for all stakeholders.
There is a reason for each of these principles. For example, leadership is needed where there is change and IT implementation always requires change. Communication - needed to effectively inform project team members about the project processes. Etc,
DeleteI.e., link principles to practice and establish how the principles apply to IT project management.
Leadership skills would basically look at the administrative and collaborative management techniques one owes as a manager of a team or project,
DeleteTechnical skills emphasis the practical evidences on a particular project while communication in the otherside is basic skill needed in administrative coordination ,Material and human resource management as well.
All i described above motivates a hierarchical structure of management, though ine general knowledge about the project is needed and known.
DeleteMr Amule, leadership is about managing change or determining new direction of an organisation. Leadership skills are therefore very much needed where IT is used because IT is for ever changing and ultimately changes the direction of an organisation in the way the organisation is managed.
DeleteMr Amule, there are many managerial methods - some seriously hierachical (and often autocratic), and others quite consultative (and so almost flat).
Deletelearn project principle emphasizes on the prevention of waste (mura):extra time ,labor, materials spent, that doesnot add value to the product or service
ReplyDeleteMr Okot, how would the principles work in Uganda? I sense that Ugandans like short-cuts in all their projects tyo the extent that buildings have collapsed and killed people. How would a Lean methodology work for IT projects in Uganda? Should we assume that Ugandans are applying Lean management methodologies?
ReplyDeletedear doctor, it is said "WASTE NOT WANT NOT"though lean project mgt emphasizes on reducing wastefulness, it critical to reconsider quality as one of the biggest expectation of the user.
DeleteMr Okot, it depends on the consumer. It is like asking one whether s/he wants a Mercedes Benz or a Nissan Micra. So check the needs of the organisation and the kind of customers they are targeting.
DeleteLean goals are:-
ReplyDeleteImprove quality, Reduce waste, Reduce time load and Total cost.
Does these make it different from project goals which are:- completion on time, completion according to budget, and performance requirement?
Mr Byansi, the lean methodology does not really change project objectives but makes sure there is little wastage (for example, fewer meetings); reduce time (this cuts down on cost and delivers the product faster thus providing the organisation with the IT advantages faster; etc. The lean methodology uses cheaper materials to achieve the same quality.
ReplyDeleteToyota Production System (TPS) is a good example of a lean strategy - quality using fewer and cheaper resources.
Good morning sir. So Dr, does that mean that Lean is the best method for project management?
ReplyDeleteLean methods are recommended where one is looking for saving on resources. Check out the lean method as used by Toyota motor company.
